Unit 5 Writing: Concluding sentences

Restate the main idea, signal the ending, and close the paragraph without copying or drifting.

In the paragraph model taught here, a concluding sentence comes last and summarizes the main idea. It should restate the topic sentence rather than copy it. Writers can use synonyms, change the sentence structure, and add a transition such as To sum up, Overall, In a word, In conclusion, or To conclude. A useful conclusion wraps up the whole paragraph. It does not introduce an unrelated topic or reduce the ending to one small supporting detail. Other kinds of writing may close differently; these checks apply to the lesson’s paragraph practice.
