Unit 5 Vocabulary: Homes and surroundings
Learn eight housing words and four useful patterns.
Housing descriptions include the home itself, its surroundings, its useful features, and the way people use it. Attract means make someone interested; provide means give something needed; and receive guests means welcome or entertain visitors. Modern conveniences are devices or systems that make life easier. A fence surrounds land, while a landscape is everything visible across an area. Access can mean the ability, opportunity, or right to reach, enter, see, or use something. Accommodation is a place to live, work, or stay.

- 1Find the relationship: A road makes it possible to reach a house.
- 2Choose the noun: This is physical access.
- 3Complete the pattern: The road gives access to the house.
Access may concern reaching a place, using a service, seeing information, or having permission.
A fence can appear in a landscape, but the two words do not mean the same thing.
Rules
- 1Learn attract as a verb that takes the interested person or group as its object.
- 2Use provide someone with something to name the receiver and what is supplied.
- 3Use receive guests for welcoming or entertaining visitors.
- 4Use access to before the place, service, or resource that can be reached or used.
- 5Distinguish a fence, which is a boundary structure, from a landscape, which is a view across an area.
- 6Interpret access from context: a well-kept road can give physical access to a home, while other contexts may concern permission or use.
