Days, months & the date

The seven days, the twelve months, and saying what day it is.

The seven days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The twelve months of the year are January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December. There is one rule that applies to every single one of them, and Azerbaijani does not share it: in English, days and months ALWAYS start with a capital letter, wherever they appear in the sentence. 'I have English on Monday.' 'My birthday is in May.' Writing 'monday' or 'may' is a spelling mistake, not a style choice. Two spellings are hard because of letters you do not hear: Wednesday has a d after the Wed-, and February has an r after the Feb-. The book's partner game is a good test of the months: one partner says a number from 1 to 12 and the other names the month and spells it — 'Six!' — 'JUNE! J-U-N-E'. To give a date, the book asks for three things: the day, the month and the number. 'Today is Monday, the fifth of May.'

🚫Common mistake

Never write a day or a month with a small letter. 'I have English on monday' is wrong; it is 'on Monday'. Azerbaijani does not do this, so it is easy to forget.

'Wednesday' has a d you do not pronounce, and 'February' has an r after Feb-. Both letters are easy to lose when pupils write what they hear.
